Apple and Stentrode: Control Your iPhone With Your Mind. At What Cost?

Open an app, send a text, or nudge your AirPods—just by thinking it. That is no longer a concept reel. Apple, working with startup Synchron, is building a brain-computer interface (BCI) that drives iPhones, iPads, and Vision Pro from neural signals. The hardware is the Stentrode, a minimally invasive implant already changing life for people with severe motor disability, including amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Apple is in a race with Elon Musk’s Neuralink. Privacy, safety, and the ethics of wiring a brain to a product line are not side issues. Here is why the work matters, how far it could go, and what it costs besides money.

Why Stentrode matters—and Apple’s bet

Announced on May 13, 2025, Apple’s project with Synchron is a marker in accessibility. The Stentrode is a stent-like device with 16 electrodes, threaded through the jugular into a vein near the brain’s motor cortex—no open-skull surgery. Once seated, it reads neural signals and turns them into digital commands: pick an icon, move a cursor, talk to Apple’s Switch Control.

  • Access, rewritten: For people with paralysis such as Mark Jackson, an ALS patient in Pittsburgh, Stentrode changed the rules. On Vision Pro, Mark “visited” the Swiss Alps and felt his legs tremble—an experience his body cannot give him. Since 2019, Synchron has implanted the device in 10 patients; after a year, none had serious adverse effects.
  • A standard, not a gadget: Apple is writing a BCI Human Interface Device (BCI HID) protocol for iOS 19, iPadOS 19, and visionOS, so brain signals sit next to touch and voice as a native input. That is the same move Apple made with Bluetooth hearing aids in 2014: make the category normal by making it a platform feature.
  • Beyond disability: The first users are people who need it. Apple and Synchron already talk about a later world where anyone drives a phone, Watch, or AirPods this way.

Morgan Stanley estimates 150,000 Americans with upper-limb disabilities could benefit soon. Synchron puts the global market at $400 billion.

Apple vs. Neuralink: two bets

Apple and Synchron are betting on less surgery. Musk’s Neuralink is betting on more metal in the cortex. Its N1 implant, with more than 1,000 electrodes pushed into brain tissue, is faster and more precise. In March 2024, Noland Arbaugh, Neuralink’s first patient, played online chess by sliding a cursor with his mind faster than many people do with a mouse. That requires brain surgery, and the risk climbs with it.

Stentrode is safer and easier to place. Sixteen electrodes also mean less data, so navigation is slower. Mark Jackson has said it cannot match the fluency of a tap on glass—an honest limit of the current hardware. Apple and Synchron are optimizing for access and for regulatory approval (expected before 2030). Neuralink wants that, and cognitive upgrades for everyone.

The risks of plugging your brain into an iPhone

The demo is electric. So is the downside:

  • Privacy: Brain data is a new frontier. Who holds the signals of your mind? A breach could expose thought or intent, and Apple has not spelled out how it will guard something this sensitive. Posts on X have already flagged the privacy problem.
  • Safety: Stentrode has been safe in 10 patients. Any brain implant still carries long-term risk: infection, device failure. FDA approval is years out.
  • Ethics: Once BCIs are a consumer product, they can widen the gap—available to people who can pay—or create pressure to “upgrade” the brain, the fear Musk attaches to AI. Hooking a mind to a phone also raises addiction and manipulation in a new key.
  • Young hardware: Stentrode navigation is slower than touch or voice, and it does not match Neuralink’s precision yet. Iterating in living people is slow on purpose.

The future of BCIs and Apple

Apple is laying track for a world where thought replaces tap. The Synchron partnership, backed by investors including Jeff Bezos and Bill Gates, is a real accessibility play and a larger one: fold the mind into the Apple stack. BCI HID clinical trials start in late 2025; Apple plans to ship the BCI HID standard with iOS 19 this fall.

The easy path is not the one in front of them. Skype’s slide—too little invention, then Zoom and Teams took the room—is a reminder that Apple has to move, or Neuralink and firms such as Paradromics will. Access, safety, and ethics have to travel together.

Controlling an iPhone with your mind is already real for a few people. It may be real for everyone soon. The open question is whether we want technology that can read what we think.
